Changes Afoot for Retired TRICARE Beneficiaries

Nov 16, 2012

The Fleet Reserve Association is reporting that retirees who live more than 40 miles from the nearest military installation or treatment facility will lose their option to be covered by TRICARE Prime. Instead, these retirees likely would shift to TRICARE Standard, a fee-for-service option with higher out-of-pocket costs, to meet their health care needs. The change would affect roughly 171,000 retirees and dependents, tentatively beginning April 1 in TRICARE’s West Region. The rest of the country would follow suit by next October.
